Cluster Fencing Application Through ISPAAD

Overview

Farmers can apply for assistance through a 100% government subsidy on the cost of fencing material. The provision of field fencing will be modeled around an enclosed drift fence concept to exclude animals from arable fields. This assistance is provided through The Integrated Support Programme for Arable Agriculture Development (ISPAAD).

Who is eligible?
  • Citizens and Non-citizens aged 18 years and above.
  • Applicants should have access to land (proof of ownership or leasehold). In case of leasehold, the lease period should not be less than 50 years.
How do I get this service?
  • Submit the relevant supporting documents to the District Crop Production offices.
  • Extensive consultations will be undertaken with farming communities and local authorities on clustering of fields to promote collective ownership of the fence.
  • Feasibility studies will then be undertaken to confirm the suitability of the proposed area and the alignment of the perimeter fence.
  • The Cluster Committee will then apply to the Land Board for the cluster fencing.
What supporting documents are required?
  • Certified copy of valid National Identity Card (Omang).
  • Certified copy of Work permit and Residence permit
  • Certified copy of Land board certificate, lease or title deed.
  • Cluster constitution.
How long will this service take?

Three (3) months.

This service is free of charge through a 100% government subsidy.

Business Plan Appraisal for Farming

Overview

This service is meant to assess business plans for those farmers who want to apply to financial institutions for funding for start-ups or to rescale (expand, modify, abandon or replace) a project or their existing businesses. The farmer is intensively involved during the assessment process for ownership and is expected to explain and translate some issues that may prove to be difficult for the officer to easily understand.

Who is eligible?

Citizen and Non-Citizen farmer with:

  • A reliable water source (excluding rain-fed production).
  • A potential financier.
  • An existing project (for those who want to use it to manage or rescale their existing project).
How do I get this service?
  • Submit developed business plan for review at the District Agribusiness Promotion Office.
  • Once the assessment of the business plan is complete, the business plan is returned to the farmer who will then submit it to the financial institution to apply for funding or use it as a reference tool for rescaling of an existing project.
What supporting documents are required?
  • Proof of residence (a certified copy of resident permit for non- citizens).
  • A certified copy of a valid National Identity Card (Omang) for citizens.
  • A Land Rights Certificate (leased or allocated by Landboard Authorities).
  • A developed business plan.
  • A land assessment report by relevant departments.​​
How long will this service take?

Two (2) weeks.

Bull Fertility Testing

Overview

This service provides bull fertility testing for farmers upon their request.

Who is eligible?

Citizen farmers

How do I get this service?
  • A request should be made by the farmer for the Animal Production Officer to visit the farm to conduct the test. ​
  • After testing the bulls, each bull is issued with a certificate with its status.
  • The fee per bull is paid after the test is completed at the nearest Animal Production Office.
What supporting documents are required?
  • A valid National Identity Card (O​mang).
  • A Brand Certificate (shows ownership).
  • A Pedigree Certificate (for commercial farmers).​
How long will this service take?

30 minutes per bull.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the test per bull is BWP 175.00.

Brand Certificate Application

Overview

This service allows Livestock Keepers to apply for a brand certificate which is used for identification of their livestock as well as for proof of ownership in line with the Branding of Cattle Act CAP 36:02. The service involves new registration, renewal and transfer of the brand certificate. B​rand certificates are valid for 10 years.

How do I get this service?
  • Applicants should visit the office with the relevant supporting documents and pay the applicable fee to the officer present at the District Office.
  • The brand certificate will then be issued to the applicant.
What supporting documents are required?
  • A valid national identification card (Omang) or a birth certificate for under 16 years citizens.
  • A valid resident permit and valid passport for non-citizens.
  • A valid Company’s Registration certificate for companies.​
How long will this service take?

In Gaborone or at Assistant Registrar designated district offices, the brand certificate can be issued in thirty (30) minutes and five (5) working days for other district offices.

How much does it cost?
  • BWP 10.00 for keeper registration. (see Livestock Registration)
  • BWP 50.00 for a new application, renewal, transfer or additional copy.

Animal Slaughtering

Overview

The Government provides facilities where people may bring animals for slaughtering.

Who is eligible?

Citizens and residents. 

How do I get this service?

Visit the Kgotla with animal registration documents and the animal(s) to be slaughtered, one day before the proposed slaughter date to the Kgosi to prove ownership.
